Spotlight on Learning:  We Are Hawks Art Show

WJM Leadership collaborated with the Art Studio and the Drawing and Painting students to put together an Art Show for We Are Hawks Week. Clea Brummit and Tekarra Keillor’s enthusiasm and efforts to bring this event together after those busy short weeks is much appreciated. The We Are Hawks Art Show is such a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their hard work and skill.

District celebrates 2022 Indigenous Role Models (PHOTOS)

The Abbotsford School District and the Mamel’awt Indigenous Education Centre are proud to announce the 2022 Indigenous Role Models. 

The Indigenous Education Advisory Committee reviewed applications submitted this fall by several remarkable grade 12 Indigenous students from secondary schools throughout the district. These students are acknowledged for connecting to their culture, leadership, and service in their schools and communities, and for their aspirations towards future goals.

Naming consultation for Sports Fields commences

The Abbotsford School District is now accepting submissions from the public for the naming of sports fields located between Colleen & Gordie Howe Middle School and W.J. Mouat Secondary School. At a winter Public Board meeting, Trustees requested that the Secretary-Treasurer commence the process of naming the two sports fields.

 Spotlight on Learning:  Science Fair Silver Medal

Caio de Figueiroa competed in the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair and won a silver medal, the Langley Environmental Partners Society Award, and a UFV Entrance Scholarship worth $4000. Caio’s investigation, “To pee or not to pee”, examined whether human urine could be used as an effective and viable fertilizer to grow radishes.  He undertook this project because his interests lie in the development of a greener, more sustainable world future. Congratulations, Caio!

Spotlight on Learning:  Applications of Electrochemistry

Students in Chemistry 12 just finished their unit on Electrochemistry.  The big idea of this unit is that oxidation and reduction reactions are complementary processes that involve the gain or loss of electrons.  Oxidation (loss of electrons) is not able to happen without reduction (gain of electrons).  To put it simply, you need something to lose electrons so another can gain.  With this big idea in mind, students were able to apply their learning to various applications:

District launches Strategic Plan and Budget Consultation for 2022-23

In accordance with the School Act, the Abbotsford Board of Education must approve a balanced budget by June 30th each year.  The Abbotsford School District is currently preparing its budget for the 2022-23 school year and is inviting employees, families and community members to share their voice in the consultation process.
