Spotlight on Learning: Math in the Virtual World

Like the well-known scene from Friends, Mouat teachers had to "pivot" again this week to online learning. Thanks to the unusual circumstances of the last 2 years, our math department has had some practice. While there's no replacement for the rich discussions, collaboration and inquiry inside a math classroom, our department has found many unique ways to replicate that experience, as much as possible, for students online.  Using asynchronous and synchronous strategies, video lessons, virtual white boards, online graphing applications and Google Meets, math classes continued this week online. Grade 12, Alexandra, said Ms. Bowater's video lessons were reminiscent of her years watching Dora the Explorer as she would find herself answering the questions being posed from the computer screen.  Another grade 12 student, Ibaadat, noted that "math in-person, as opposed to online, gives more opportunities to have discussions and make connections to the real world, but either way, practice is the only way to be successful. Practicing in-person with help available is just much easier!" Despite the entertainment factor provided by kitten interruptions during online learning students and teachers are looking forward to being back in the classroom.

First People’s Principles of Learning in Action

In Ms. Roberts’ class students were incorporating Indigenous Knowledge and First Peoples’ Principles of Learning with a collaboration of Allison Gardner, District Teacher of Indigenous Success (Supporting Indigenous Pedagogy). While studying 13 Moons in her classroom, students were asked to demonstrate their understanding of Indigenous Knowledge using a creative point of view. The result is a stunning set of artistic pieces created by the students which tells the story of the 13 Moons.  Plans are in place to create a 2022 Calendar based on the results.  Nice work Ms. Gardner, Ms. Roberts and Mouat students.

Abbotsford Police City Tournament

Our Senior Girls Basketball team is the host for the Sr. Girls Abbotsford City Police Tournament happening at our gym next week both during the school day and into the evening hours.  Come on by and check out the action.  Gr 8, Gr 9, Junior and Senior Girls and Boys action is taking place throughout Abbotsford schools with the finals for both her boys and girls hosted at CBC on Saturday, December 11.  Good luck to all our school teams taking part next week and a huge thank you to Sr. Girls team for hosting.

Kudos Hawks Athletics

In October 2021, the Abbotsford News published their A-List Recognition of outstanding business, and organizations throughout Abbotsford.  We, WJ Mouat Haws, are proud to be the recipients of the 2021 Outstanding School Sports Team.  This award is a huge credit to our coaches who volunteer an extraordinary amount of time to creating high-caliber teams, to our students who put in an equal or greater amount of time perfecting their skills and game IQ, and to our school community to support our athlete-scholars to be the very best. THANK YOU to each of you for contributing to our success.

Mask Etiquette

As we are three months into the school year, and we are becoming more comfortable around each other, we want to remind our Mouat community, staff, and students, about our Covid protocols.  While in our school, please:

  1. Wear a mask, properly
  2. Hand sanitize upon entry into the building
  3. Students complete your daily health check at home before coming to school (stay home if you have any illness)
  4. Staff complete your daily health check in (QR form)
  5. Visitors complete the health check and sign in by scanning the QR code at the main entrance

Thank you for keeping us all safe – we are in this together!
