Spotlight on Learning:   Integration Project for Calculus 12

Calculus 12 students are busy working on their final projects. This integration project requires the students to submit a blueprint design for a bridge and this design is only limited by their imagination. Using all of their graphing skills for transforming functions and manipulating domains, students write equations to represent their shapes and to make their designs a reality.  Their integration skills allow them to find areas of non-traditional shapes as well as volumes of revolution. By giving these areas depth, the pieces fit together like a puzzle. With careful attention to detail, any design can become a reality.... Garfield? Mickey Mouse? Super Mario? Anything is possible. Most students enter their equations into Desmos to see their designs come to life and several students have used their drafting skills to 3D print their creations.    The next time you walk by 222 and see what looks like simple works of art on the walls, ask to see the pages of blueprint that accompany these incredible designs.
