Spotlight on Learning:  Drama Expression

Learning drama can be challenging in your native language let alone in a second or third.  In Drama, our unit focus is creating expression using a phone call scenario.  Students are asked to pair up with another student and present their phone call in English with an emphasis on expression within the language.  Students whose first language is not English were given the opportunity to present their phone call in their first language – students responded with an emphatic YES!  Although most of the audience will not be able to understand the words, it gives the students a new freedom to focus on expression and delivery instead of the language.  After working with Ms. W who helped record the scene structure; the students were on their feet in no time arguing with full expression.  When asked how this option made them feel, they spoke about how it was "much less scary" and "less on their shoulders".

Crop Tops vs Sport Bras

We understand and appreciate that the trendy fashion right now is crop tops (short tops) which often show the area above the waistline of pants.  And we appreciate that finding tops in stores that aren’t short is a struggle.  However, we are seeing more and more sports bras being worn without a top, sweatshirt, blouse etc. over the bra.  Just a quick reminder, that our dress code is about creating an environment conducive to learning.

Interested in Musical Theatre?

ONE SONG GLORY is a fully subsidized six-weekend long intensive youth musical theatre training program that builds community, self-confidence, and self-expression through a combination of new music creation, masterclasses, rehearsal, and online presentations.   https://musicalstagecompany.com/in-community/one-song-glory/

100 youth between the ages of 13-21 nation-wide will come together online to train under the guidance of Canada’s top musical theatre professionals in a positive and encouraging environment. Our goal is to offer participants a professional rehearsal experience, insight about the industry, the chance to engage with new works, and the guidance to develop a fruitful career in the performing arts.

In an effort to share the enriching qualities of the theatre with a wider cross-section of young people, we are actively seeking a balance of performing and non-performing artists (writers, visual artists, poets, designers, filmmakers, stage managers, and any non-performing discipline we may have missed).

Deadline October 11th, 2021.

Grad Cruise Round 2

The final Grad Cruise was October 5 which featured not one but two boats with 170 Grade 12s.  While the weather in Abbotsford was torrential rain, the skies in Vancouver we calm and dry.  An accident on the Stanley Park causeway had us starting late but our Cruise company had us on the water for a full 2 ½ hours.  While all enjoyed the lights of the Lions Gate bridge, and English Bay, Grads on Boat 2 had their cruise by candlelight!    Thanks to all Grads for being fantastic HAWKS and tremendous representatives of WJ Mouat.  Huge Kudos to our teacher supervisors without whose time the event would not be possible.
