Driving Question: How can students authentically appreciate Francophone music

TEACHER DESCRIPTION and / or REFLECTION:

Throughout the year, students are given the opportunity to listen and reflect upon Francophone music. They are given time to learn about the artists and their stories. In semester two, my classes participated in a world-wide musical competition as the students voted for their favorite artists. This year, we were able to attend the concert of one of the artists, Missy D at Granville Island. Students were tasked with two things: create a poster to grab her attention and demonstrate their appreciation of her music and to be a great audience member while at her concert. Furthermore, students were able to be “tourists” for a day. They were able to try different foods and take a lot of pictures!

STUDENT REFLECTION:

“I really like the Missy D activity because it helped us get to experience the French culture.”

“I loved the freedom and independence we had at Granville Island and the interaction with her was very interpersonal.”

“We go to be creative and have fun while also using our French in a practical way.”
